This engraving is from Jacob Spon, Voyagie door Italien, Dalmatien, Grieckenland, en de Levant. Gedaan in de jaren 1675 en 1676 (Amsterdam: Jan ten Hoorn, 1689), a Dutch translation of the French Voyage d'Italie, de Dalmatie, de Grèce, et du Levant, first published in Lyon in 1678. Jacob Spon (1647-1685) was a French doctor and scholar of Greek with an interest in archaeology. Across these two years, Spon travelled with the botanist and collector Sir George Wheler (1650–1723) to Italy, then Greece, and the Constantinople and the Levant. Jan Luyken (1649–1712) was a Dutch illustrator and engraver who worked for a number of publishers both in and outside of Amsterdam.
