Description

Terentius Afer, Publius. P. Terentivs Afer A.M. Antonio Mvreto Emendatvs Eivsdem Mvreti argumenta et scholia in singulas comoedias. Venice: Aldo II Manuzio, 1575

A volume from the library of the Sienese poet Bellisario Bulgarini (1539-1614), with as usual a precise note of place, date and purchase price. Working chiefly from an "Inventario di Bellisario Bulgarini il giovane" (ASS, Archivio Bulgarini d'Elci, filza 81), Daniele Danesi has been patiently reconstructing the family library (Cento anni di libri: la biblioteca di Bellisario Bulgarini e della su famiglia, circa 1560-1660, Pisa 2014). This volume is not among the books registered by Danesi thus far.

8vo (148 x 95 mm). Italic and Roman type, 30 lines plus headline. collation: ?8-???8 (-(((8 A-Y8 a-f8: 272 leaves (3(8, f8 blank). Woodcut portrait of Aldo the Elder on title-page, arms of Aldo the Younger on verso. (Closely trimmed at head-edge, a few paper flaws, occasional light foxing or browning.)

binding: Modern vellum (154 x 103 mm), tan morocco spine label, lettered in gilt, blue speckled edges.

provenance: Bellisario Bulgarini (1539–1619), inscription at end, dated at Rome, 18 June 1582. acquisition: Purchased from Bottega Apulja, Bari, 1982. references: UCLA 884; Renouard 219/13; Edit16 27529; USTC 858790
