Description

Sannazaro, Jacopo. Arcadia del Sannazaro. Florence: Filippo I Giunta, March 1514

[Bound with:] Bembo, Pietro. Gli Asolani di messer Pietro Bembo. [N.p., n.d.; final three leaves including colophon(?) lacking]

The second work is evidently an unrecorded edition, possibly an unauthorized reprint. The loss of the last three leaves make it difficult to identify further. Though sometimes misidentified as the Florence Giunta edition (USTC 813367; CNCE 4987), the quiring here is inconsistent with both the Giunta and Aldine editions.

8vo (154 x 99 mm). Italic type, 29 + 30 lines plus headline. collation: (1) a-k8 l4: 84 leaves; (2) a-n8 o10: 111 leaves (of 114, lacking o8-10). Architectural frontispiece and printer's device to verso of last leaf in first work. (First two quires in first work somewhat loosening, second work lacks final three leaves, light spotting and staining across both works.)

binding: Roman dark brown morocco (157 x 98 mm), ca. 1530, single gilt fillet around sides, gilt palmette at outside angles, frame of single gilt fillet containing repeated arabesque stamp, in center panel two square frames within single gilt fillet one on top of the other containing tendril and leafy roll, inside these two frames, a knot with punch at four sides and palmette at each inside corner, traces of four pairs of fabric ties, spine with four compartments, lower compartments with blind hatched knotwork and blind quatrefoil, edges gilt and gauffered. (Some small wormholes in the binding, spine restored, gilding on the edges a little rubbed.)
