A FINE ARMORIAL BINDING FOR THE DUC DE SULLY, Maximilien-François de Béthune (1559-1641), adviser to Henri IV and, among other posts, grand master of artillery.
12mo (145 x 75 mm). Roman and italic types, 28 lines plus headline. collation: ã4 A-N12 O6 Aa-Ee12 Ff6. Woodcut printer’s device on title. (Slight stain on first few leaves.)
binding: Armorial binding (146 x 82 mm) for the Duke of Sully (OHR 441), dark red morocco gilt, outer frame of 3 gilt fillets and gilt dots, upper cover in oval arms of Béthune supported by lions, surmounted by ducal crown and with 2 crossed canons below, lower cover in oval his emblem, eagle in air holding lightning bolt with "Quo jussa Jovis" [Guigard II, 54], flat spine gilt in 5 compartments with similar fillet and dot design, title in gilt in second compartment. (Spine ends renewed, a few minor neat repairs.)
