LARGE-MARGINED COPY OF ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS ILLUSTRATED BOOKS OF THE FRENCH RENAISSANCE IN AN ALLA GRECA BINDING BY THE ROYAL BINDER; THE CASTELLAN–BEAUPRÉ–FAIRFAX-MURRAY–RAHIR COPY.

An anonymous French translation of the Rudimentum novitiorum, extending the text to reach the then-present, the year 1536. The copy is illustrated with 78 woodcuts, by repetition of 57 different blocks: the majority are Lyon blocks from the Davost-Genevey edition of 1506 (Mortimer French 468), including the two double-page maps, depicting Palestine and the world, and several others can be traced to the 1488 and c. 1503 Paris editions (cf. 467).

A similar binding is found on a copy of Copernicus's De Revolutionibus with the arms of Henri II, the product of the Royal Binder (Laffitte and Le Bars, Reliures royales de la Renaissance, no. 102). The central ornament on the present volume is also seen on a 1556 Lyon imprint of the Breviarium Romanum (Davis Gift I, p. 173, II.13.A), a 1503 Lyon Molinet (B.L., C.7.b.14) and Bibliotheca Brookeriana, 12 October 2023, lot 109 (Alcionio).
