Description
GAIGNY, JEAN DE. Brevissima & facillima in omnes divi Pauli epistolas scholia, ultra priores editiones, ex antiquissimis Graecorum authoribus, abunde locupletata. Paris: Simon de Colines, 1543
A CONTEMPORARY BOLOGNESE BINDING BY THE PFLUG & EBELEBEN BINDER, FOR AN ANONYMOUS "F.A.N.G.B."
The same borders and overall decoration can be seen in Hobson and Quaquarelli, Legature bolognesi del Rinascimento, items 37 and 38; the central cartouche is also found on De Marinis III 1317 (plate CCXXV), and some of the other tools on De Marinis III 1348 (plate CCXXXI, made for Alessandro Farnese). It is quite possible that the binding was made for a German student in Bologna. The gilt centrepiece surrounded by a blind-tooled border was typical of Bolognese bindings of the time.
These initials and similar decoration are also found on a copy of Claude Guilliaud, Collatio in omnes divi Pauli apostoli epistolas (Paris: Simon de Colines, 1543), recorded by De Marinis 3061bis and now in The Hague, Koninklijke Bibliotheek, 1788 C 7 (exhibited: Jan Storm van Leeuwen, De meest opmerkelijke boekbanden uit eigen bezit: catalogus van de tentoonstelling gehouden in de expositiezalen van de Koninklijke Bibliotheek, 14 september-20 oktober 1983 (The Hague 1983), no. 27 (upper cover reproduced)).
An almost identical binding is found on Bibliotheca Brookeriana, 10 December 2024, lot 1131 (Chrysostomus), but the initials read "F.A.M.G".
8vo (170 x 111 mm). Roman type, text and marginal commentary, 54 lines plus headline. collation: π8 a-z8 A-G8 H4: 252 leaves ([π]8v and final verso blank). Woodcut initial on first leaf of text, initial spaces with printed guidelines throughout. (Some browning and spotting.)
binding: Contemporary Bolognese brown morocco tooled in gilt and blind (175 x 118 mm) by the Pflug & Ebeleben Binder, open frame containing blind darts along spine extending to inner frame, inner frame containing repeated arabesque within tripe fillets, central panel with blind arabesque cornerpieces and flowers surrounding central gilt leafy cartouche with title lettered in gilt on upper covers, lower covers with the initials "F. A. N. G. B.", stubs from 4 pairs of ties, spine with 3 full and 4 half bands, compartments with saltires in blind, dark edges, possibly oxidised silver, manuscript title to tail-edge. (Binding slightly rubbed, recornered, spine ends repaired, pastedowns slightly wormed.)
provenance: "F. A. N. G. B.", initials on binding. acquisition: Purchased in 2017 from Librairie Lardanchet, Paris. references: BP16 111232; Schreiber, Simon de Colines, 201; Renouard, Bibliographie des éditions de Simon de Colines (Paris 1894), p. 375; USTC 140789
