A LATER EDITION OF ALBANI'S WORK ON PAPAL POWER IN A CONTEMPORARY ROMAN BINDING BY MARCANTONIO GUILLERY.


Gian Girolamo Albani (1509-1591) was an Italian Roman Catholic cardinal of Albanian descent and the author of a series of works on ecclesiastical themes.


This volume is in a contemporary Roman binding by Marcantonio Guillery (fl. 1558-1562). For a binding with similar tooling, on another copy of the same 1561 Venice edition of the present work, see Fumagalli, Di Demetrio Canevari medico e bibliofilo genovese e delle preziose legature che si dicono a lui appartenute, 1903, pl [IV], no.1 (A. Hobson, Apollo and Pegasus, "List B: Bindings by Marcantonio Guillery", p.89, no. 9).

4to (209 x 143 mm). Roman type, 28 lines plus headline. collation: a4 A-Z4 2A-2I4 *4 2*6: 142 leaves. Title-page with woodcut device, woodcut initials, several pen-trials in an early modern hand. (Endleaves removed, staining on last few leaves and lower pastedown, mostly marginal worming from 2F4 to end of textblock.)


binding: Contemporary Roman binding by Marcantonio Guillery (212 x 148 mm), red morocco profusely gilt, broad ivy border flanked by blind lines around sides, centre panel filled with swirling arabesque and leafy tools, spine with 5 full and 2 half bands, manuscript title on paper label to third compartment, traces of 4 pairs of ties, gilt edges. (Rebacked with most of original spine laid down.)
