FIRST COLLECTIVE EDITION, containing the first appearance of Le Lutrin and Satire II à la Molière, IN A CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH BINDING.
This volume was once in the collection of John Sheffield, earl of Mulgrave, afterwards 1st Duke of Buckingham (1648-1721). He served as Lord Privy Seal and Lord President of the Council during the late Stuart period, while also producing works of poetry, including the Essay on Poetry and Essay on Satire, the latter being an attack on many notable persons which was often attributed to Dryden.
4to (239 x 174 mm). Roman and italic type. collation: *2 A-R4 S8 T-Y4 Z2 *4 a-o4 (2 additional unsigned leaves: frontispiece, plus full-page engraved plate bound between T2 and T3): 156 leaves. Engraved allegorical frontispiece, title-page with woodcut device, woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces. (Occasional light marginal dampstaining.)
binding: Contemporary English red morocco (246 x 184 mm), gilt fillet around sides, arms of Duke of Buckingham on covers, 5 raised bands, compartments with gilt tulip surrounded by floral and leafy tools, black morocco label "OEVVR|D|XXX", gilt roll tooling on edges of covers, gilt edges, marbled endpapers.
