ENGRAVED

Thomas Tagg (before 1780–1809), 1807.

James Ward originally trained as an engraver under John Raphael Smith (1751–1812), but later became the consummate animal painter of his generation. This depiction of a prize Devon bull—a breed native to south-west England—was painted for Boydell & Co. as part of a scheme to produce scale accurate paintings of various livestock. These were intended to be kept as records of the different breeds across the country.
