Elizabeth Jennings, the daughter of the eccentric collector Constantine 'Dog' Jennings, married William Lock the Younger (1767–1847) of Norbury Park, a gifted amateur artist who was a pupil and friend of Henry Fuseli (1741–1825). His father, William Lock the Elder (1732–1810), had been an early patron of Thomas Lawrence; Lawrence's portrait of his wife, Frederica Augusta, in the Nelson-Atkins Museum, is considered one of the artist's finest works.1
This painting probably dates from circa 1810, the year of the death of William Lock the Elder, which may account for the sitter's rather sombre dress.
