Widely considered one of the greatest animal painters of his generation, James Ward is highly celebrated for his majestic and anatomically detailed portraits of pedigree horses set against sweeping landscapes. Indeed, the present example – signed at lower right – is exactly the type of picture for which Ward is most acclaimed. The artist has carefully delineated each strand of the hunter's mane, the veins on its legs, and the glean on its coat.
