An Iznik Pottery Border Tile, Turkey, circa 1570
of rectangular form, decorated in underglaze cobalt-blue, turquoise and bole-red, outlined in black, with çintamani in white, turquoise and red divided by paired white tiger stripes on a cobalt-blue ground, beneath a frieze of palmettes

Border tiles with a çintamani design were used to decorate the Hirka-i Saadet and the library of Ahmed I in the Topkapi Saray Palace. Related tiles include MET Museum, New York (acc. no.2019.173), Christie’s, London, 25 April 2024, lot 146, 6 October 2011, lot 303, 7 April 2011, lot 312 and Sotheby’s, London, 9 April 2008, lot 321. These tiles show small variations, for example, some include small red pendants on the çintamani roundels, and the narrow borders above and below the field differ but are most commonly decorated with a simple narrow red band or two plain red and white bands. The present tile unusually includes a narrow frieze of trilobed florets along one edge. Another tile sharing this distinct border is in a private collection, Los Angeles (Gerard Paquin, 'Cintamani', in HALI, issue 64, 1992, p.111).
