According to the provenance supplied when the bookcase was sold by the Washington, DC antiques dealer Macy Darling, this bookcase was originally the property of Viscount Sidmouth at Erleigh Court, a Tudor manor house near Sonning, Berkshire. The MP Henry Addington, later 1st Viscount Sidmouth, served as Speaker of the House of Commons from 1789 and Prime Minister between 1801 until 1804. Lord Sidmouth inherited the estate at Erleigh Court in 1836 from his father-in-law but never took up residence in the property. Erleigh Court was pulled down in 1935.
The Washington philanthropist and art collector Jean Montgomery Ridell (1910-2010) was a patron of the Washington Ballet and bequeathed an important group of Russian enamelled silver including works by Fabergé to the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore.
