Conrad Mauter, cabinetmaker, received master in 1777.

Of German origin, Mauter settled in Paris in 1766 as a freelance craftsman. His reputation allowed him to become a regular supplier to the Count of Artois (the future Charles X) and to create furniture for the Temple Palace, the Bagatelle Pavilion, and the Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye. He received a royal commission from Louis XVI in 1791 for the Château de Saint-Cloud: some commodes and a wardrobe set consisting of "d'une table de nuit, d'une chaise d'affaire et d'un bidet."

This table reflects the neoclassical style of the reign of Louis XV with its square legs and simple marquetry combining rosewood and gilt bronze. Other cabinetmakers, such as Daivd Roetgen, also produced similar pieces.
