Jean-Baptiste Gourdin was the eldest son of Jean Gourdin, known as Père Gourdin. After training with the sculptor Toussaint Foliot, he opened his own workshop on rue de Clery, working for a wealthy clientele including the prince de Soubise, the duc de Rohan, and Queen Marie Antoinette.
