Jean-André Lepaute (1720-1789)

Trained as a watchmaker in Paris from 1749, Lepaute made a clock for Louis XV in 1751 with a unique mechanism and a single wheel. He was appointed Horloger to the King in 1753 and in 1755 published his Traité d'horlogerie, a reference work. With the help of his brother, he made monumental clocks such as the one at the Invalides and the Hôtel de Ville in Paris.
