Description

the box moulded in low-relief with architectural scrollwork entwined with flowering vine, enclosing panels of figures in landscapes, the lid exterior with a scene of a mother and child with a sheep, the interior lid painted with a large panel of a couple sat beneath an obelisk, with gold mount 

together with a German porcelain rectangular basket-weave moulded snuff box, probably Meissen, painted with small flower sprays and sprigs, with gold mount chased with rocailles

Acquired at the above sale.

A further snuff box similar to the oval example was in the collection of Alfred Joseph, illustrated in Barbara Beaucamp-Markowsky, Porcelain Boxes of the 18th Century, Munich, 1985, cat. no. 167. By descent, it entered the Helmut Joseph collection and later sold at Bonhams, London, 5 July 2011, lot 20.
