rectangular with elegantly waved corners, the slender gold cagework mounts forming a quatrefoil on lid and base, slightly tapering sides, the wafer-thin panels of bloodstone mottled in shades of red and cream, the bow shape of the slender thumbpiece repeated on the footrim, traces of maker’s mark, charge and discharge marks of Hubert Louvet (1732-1738), Paris date letter T for 1735,

A slightly larger bloodstone snuff box by Hardivilliers of similar outline, with reeded gold mounts, made four years prior to the present lot was formerly in the Ashburton collection (see A. Kenneth Snowman, Eighteenth Century Gold Boxes of Europe, Woodbridge 1990, pl. 150). Another very elegant, double-opening box by the same maker, featuring carnelian panels, dated 1738/39 belonged to an important private collection and was sold at Sotheby’s Geneva, 16 May 2025, lot 1063.
