Skilfully modelled in the form of a dragon within a ring resembling a twisted rope, this pendant testifies to the virtuosic craftsmanship of the Warring States period to early Han dynasty. For Warring States period jade rings worked with this ‘rope-twist’ design, see one from the Qing court collection and preserved in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Jadeware (I), Hong Kong, 1996, pl. 121. For other Warring States jade ‘dragon’ pendants with the beasts’ bodies rendered to resemble a twisted rope, see one sold in these rooms, 9th April 2024, lot 3611, and another in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, object no. 1985.214.99.
