The Ehrenbreitstein Fortress stands on the east bank of the Rhine, where the Mosel and Rhine rivers meet. By 1830, the sprawling citadel had been completed, featuring thick ramparts and an extensive underground network. Webb depicted a similar view of the fortress in a painting exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1865 (no. 204).
