Set against the dynamism of modern city life, Sala presents the Romanesque architecture of St Stephen’s Cathedral in a refined study of the north tower, where the movement of figures in the foreground contrasts with the monument’s imposing stillness. The tallest spire is softly illuminated with a golden hue, suggesting either sunrise or sunset, while the remainder of the structure is cast in gentle shadow.
In addition to his role as President of the Associazione degli Acquerellisti Lombardi, Sala received numerous commissions, which led to extensive travel between Paris, London, Vienna, and Saint Petersburg.
