Description

Scheuchzer, Johann Jakob

Museum diluvianum. Zurich: Typis Henrici Bodmeri, 1716

8vo (166 x 96 mm; a few leaves unopened). Engraved frontispiece depicting the author in front of Noah’s Ark, typographical headpieces, dedication leaf; instances of faint foxing to upper margins, some margins lightly frayed. Contemporary calf, spine in six compartments, second gilt-lettered, others with gilt floral motif, edges speckled red; rubbed at extremities, light wear to top of upper cover.

A catalog of geological specimens in his cabinet, Scheuchzer’s work on diluvial geology supported his belief in the biblical story of Noah’s Ark. The work was dedicated to Sir Hans Sloane, the renowned botanist, physician, and expert on the natural history of Jamaica.
