Description

Gatterer, Christoph Wilhelm Jakob

Verzeichnis der vornehmsten Schriftsteller über alle Theile des Bergwesens. Erstes Stück I-Zweytes Stück]. Göttingen: Vandenhoek, 1787-862

Two volumes in one, 8vo (167 x 97 mm). Some light browning, generally very good. Early 19th-century marbled boards.

The first bibliography devoted to German mining and minerology according to Besterman. Approximately 1350 titles are listed. Second enlarged edition of the first part; first edition of the second part. Very rare: OCLC locates no copies in the U.S. and only one copy appears in Rare Book Hub (Hartung and Hartung, 2007).

"Rare. The first portion is a general bibliography of mineralogy, mining, minting, and salt containing some minor biographical information. This part originally appeared in 1785 but was very much expanded and published again in 1787, and this is the more common issue. In the meantime, the second part focusing on the Harz region of Germany and its mining bibliography was published in 1786” (Schuh, Mineralogy & Crystallography: A Biobliography, 1469 to 1920 (in progress)).
