Description
Boerhaave, Herman
Elements of chemistry, being the annual lectures of Herman Boerhaave, M.D. … translated from the original Latin, by Timothy Dallowe, M.D. London: J. & J. Pemberton, J. Clarke, A. Millar, and J. Gray, 1735
Two volumes, 4to (260 x 194 mm). 17 folding engraved plates, woodcut tailpieces; a few stray spots but overall a clean copy. Contemporary brown paneled calf, covers tooled in blind with rectangular black center panels, spines in six compartments, second with black gilt-lettered labels, edges speckled red; joints tender, one or two stains to covers, joints slightly cracked at top, extremities rubbed with some loss, tear to upper pastedown of volume two.
First unabridged English edition of Boerhaave’s Elementa chemiae (1732).
The translator, Timothy Dallowe, was evidently a former student of Boerhaave’s (Duveen). Contains several alterations approved by the author, as expressed in the translator’s preface.
