As inscribed on the old label affixed to the painting's reverse, this portrait was painted in Paris, where Jagemann studied under Jacques-Louis David (1748–1825) from 1802–4. The composition is based on David's celebrated depiction of Napoleon Crossing the Alps, the prime version of which, datable to 1801, is in the Château de Malmaison, Rueil-Malmaison.1
