Louis-Simon Boizot was directeur de sculpture at Sèvres from 1773 to 1809. This model of Napoleon as First Consul was created by Boizot and first produced at Sèvres in 1802, adapted from an earlier version of 1800, which depicted the general in the same attire but with slightly longer hair. For a discussion of the model see Louis-Simon Boizot 1743-1809, Sculpteur du roi et directeur de l'atelier de sculpture à la Manufacture de Sèvres, Paris, 2001, p. 242, cat. no. 87.
