Description

of Ralph Wood-type, sponged in brown and green glazes, the saint seated astride his horse and spearing the vanquished dragon, on an oval rocky mound base

Haut. 18,2 cm ; Height 11 1/8 in

A similar model of St. George and the Dragon is illustrated in P. Williams and P. Halfpenny, A Passion for Pottery, Further Selections from the Henry H. Weldon Collection, 2006, p. 307, cat. no. 209, where the authors note the suggestion that the source for this model was a bronze by Francesco Fanelli (circa 1580-1661).
