Alexandre-Auguste Fiocchi (1803–c. 1896), Paris and Rochefort, by 1886 (according to an inscription on the reverse).

This composition closely relates to a painting by Piat-Joseph Sauvage (1744–1818), of around 1799–1804, in the Musée Carnavalet, Paris.1 Other versions of this composition can be found in the Musée Marmottan, Paris, the Musée national des châteaux de Malmaison & Bois-Préau, Rueil-Malmaison, the Musée Napoléon, Île-d'Aix and the library of the Institut de France, Paris.

Note on Provenance

According to an inscription on the reverse, this picture was previously owned by Alexandre-Auguste Fiocchi: a miniaturist and art collector who settled in Rochefort. In 1859, Fiocchi donated a large part of his collection to the city's museum. In return for his donation, he was appointed as the museum's conservator.
