This composition closely relates to a painting in the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery, Exeter, today attributed to Laurent Dabos (1761–1835), but formerly given to his master, Jacques-Louis David (1748–1825).1 This design was evidently familiar to David's students, among which Girodet was considered one of the most talented.
