Description

of oval form with a pierced cresting carved with cherubs and with pierced with a cypher, regilt

130cm high, 100cm wide; 51in., 39 3/8in.

Graham Child, World Mirrors 1650-1900, London, 1990, p.68, fig.22.

The design for this giltwood mirror is probably derived from Baroque engravings of the second half of the 17th century, particularly those of the French mannerist designer and engraver, Jean Lepautre (1618–1682) and those of Daniel Marot (1661-1752) who published Nouveaux Livre d'Orfèvrerie in circa 1701-1703. See Lepautre's design for an oval picture frame above a console table (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, RP-P-1904-1886) and Marot's design for four mirrors (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, RP-P-1964-3129).

A similar mirror was sold at Sotheby's, London, 19th November 1993, lot 38.
