Lot Details

Description

the arched plates enclosed by architectural motifs, C-scrolls, rockwork and foliage in the typical rocaille manner and surmounted by an eagle, re-gilt

86cm high, approx. 45cm wide;

2ft. 10in., 1ft. 5 ¾ in.

The design of the present lot features various motifs associated with Thomas Chippendale. Each asymmetrical frame is carved with scrolls, rockwork and square architectural pilasters which feature in designs by the cabinetmaker in his 'Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director' of 1754, in particular see plate CXL. This influential publication was a source of patterns for designers and cabinet makers and these girandoles owe much to that publication.
