Exclusively reserved for imperial consumption, teadust glaze was introduced in the Yongzheng era to emulate archaic bronzes and was popularised during the Qianlong reign.
Aptly termed 'teadust' because of its characteristic flecked olive-green tone that resembles the colour of ground tea leaves, the glaze was achieved through the use of iron oxide and careful manipulation of the firing temperature. During the high-temperature firing process, yellow crystals in the glaze precipitated, creating a contrast against the dark green ground and resulting in the desired tea-dust effect.
The robust form of the current vase accentuates its reference to the past while allowing the subtle depth of its color to radiate from the vessel. Compare two closely related vases sold in these rooms, 2nd May 2000, lot 620, and 9th October 2012, lot 3039. A vase of this type, but covered in a Guan-type glaze, was sold twice in these rooms, 10th April 2006, lot 1606, and again, 8th October 2009, lot 1626.
