FIRST EDITION, 2 volumes, 4to (287 x 233 mm), general title (dated 1880), letterpress sectional title in each volume dated 1788, hand-coloured pictorial engraved sectional title in each volume, 70 numbered engraved plates, FINELY COLOURED BY HAND, MANY HEIGHTENED WITH GOLD, many insects captioned in Latin in two contemporary hands, 6 page manuscript index at end of first volume, 1 page manuscript index at end of second volume, CONTEMPORARY GREEN MOROCCO GILT, spines with raised bands in six compartments, gilt edges, pink endpapers, inner dentelles, pink silk ties loosely preserved, captions of some plates slightly shaved at outer margin, especially in second volume


RARE, especially with the general title. Stoll’s work deals with the order hemiptera or “true bugs” including cicadas and shield bugs. The publisher, Jan Christiaan Sepp, was one of the foremost publishers of Dutch natural history books.
