A collection of 4 city views from Civitates Orbis Terrarum (Cologne: Bertram Buchholtz, c. 1572-1617), comprising:
i) Rome and the surrounding area, “Roma”, double-page engraved town plan, unframed: c. 345 x 490 mm, framed: 495 x 635 mm, hand-coloured, text on verso, previously folded, archivally framed, not examined out of frame;
ii) Mexico City and Cuzco, Peru, “Mexico, Regia et Celebris Hispaniae Novae Civitas” and “Cusco Regni Peru in Novo Orbe Caput”, two side-by-side engraved views on one sheet, unframed: c. 285 x 485 mm, framed: 495 x 635 mm, hand-coloured, text on verso, previously folded, archivally framed, not examined out of frame;
iii) Oxford and Windsor, “Oxonium Nobile Anglie Oppidum…” and “Vindesorium Celeberrimum Angliae Castrum…”, horizontal engraved views on one sheet, unframed: c. 375 x 495 mm, framed: 495 x 635 mm plates signed by Georg Hoefnagel, hand-coloured, text on verso, previously folded, archivally framed, some creasing and wear around central fold, with 230 mm closed tear to fold, two small light ink stains and a very small hole to upper section of Oxford view, not examined out of frame;
iv) Huy, Belgium, on the Meuse River, “Huum Opp. Condrusorum Caput”, dated 1574, double-page engraved town plan, unframed: c. 320 x 475 mm, framed: 495 x 635 m, hand-coloured, text on verso, previously folded, archivally framed, not examined out of frame
Civitates Orbis Terrarum, published in six volumes between 1572 and 1617, was THE FIRST PRINTED ATLAS OF THE TOWNS OF THE WORLD. It was primarily the work of Georg Braun (1541–1622), German topographer and editor, and Frans Hogenberg (1535–1590), Flemish-German engraver and publisher. The four spreads here depict Rome, Mexico City and Peru, Oxford and Windsor, and Huy. This set includes THE ONLY TWO AMERICAN VIEWS in the atlas.
