Description
Vico, Enea. Ex libris XXIII Commentariorum in vetera imperatorum Romanorum numismata Aeneae Vici liber primus. Venice: [Paolo Manuzio], 1560
A second copy, without the engraved device of Vico pasted on the verso of the engraved title-page, but with numerous coins cut from another copy and pasted in margins (as observed in a few other copies by Renouard.)
4to (227 x 165 mm). Roman type, 34 lines plus headline. collation: A2 B4 [C]4 D-Q4 R2 α4 β2: 70 leaves. Engraved title-page and portrait of Caesar, 8 full-page engraved illustrations of coins, with a second set of the engraved coins cut out and neatly pasted at the start of each chapter, additional plate illustrating objects frequently depicted on coins following K2, historiated woodcut initials, Aldine device on R2v. (Occasional light soiling, ink stain to title — possibly an old censorship mark — with small section of lower blank margin excised, additional plate affixed along inner margin of K3. )
binding: Contemporary limp vellum (231 x 168 mm), five bands piercing covers at spine, flat spine with manuscript spine title and old shelfmarks, traces of two pairs of ties. (Lightly soiled and worn.)
