A PARISIAN BINDING FOR MARCUS FUGGER, with his ownership inscription and pressmarks. For other volumes in the sale with Fugger provenance, see also lots 1587, 1606, 1683 and 1693.


Second edition of the first French translation (the first appeared in 1532). The binding is very similar to Cicero, Les epistres familiares (Paris, 1545), for which see Bibliotheca Brookeriana V, 10 December 2024, lot 1058.

8vo (163 x 98 mm). Roman type, 31 lines plus headline. collation: A8 A-S8 T2: 114 leaves. Title-page with woodcut device, woodcut initials. (Some browning.)


binding: Contemporary Parisian brown calf for Marcus Fugger (172 x 109 mm), 3 blind fillets around sides, frame of 3 blind fillets, gilt fleuron at corners, in centre gilt crowned double-headed spread eagle, spine with gilt rosette or quatrefoil in compartments, vellum label in second compartment with title in ink, plain edges with title lettered in ink on fore-edge. (Spine ends and corners renewed, upper endleaf removed.)
