FIRST EDITION IN A CONTEMPORARY CALF BINDING.


Important biography of Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Pieresc (1580-1637) by his friend Pierre Gassendi (1592-1655), with engraved portrait of Peiresc by the French engraver and painter, Claude Mellan (1598-1688).

4to (249 x 181 mm). Roman and some italic type, 30 lines plus headline. collation: A-3G4 [2]A-D4 (3G4v blank): 224 leaves. Engraved portrait of Peiresc bound in between B1 and B2, woodcut printer's device on title-page, woodcut initials and head- and tailpieces, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century manuscript descriptions of text to upper endleaf. (Some quires browned, some light spotting, marginal stains toward end.)


binding: Contemporary tan calf (256 x 188 mm), triple gilt fillets around sides, rectangular inner frame composed of triple gilt fillets, gilt vase with flowers at outer angles, spine with 5 full bands, gilt cruciform-shaped group of tools, stubs from 2 pairs of ties, marbled edges and pastedowns. (Binding somewhat rubbed and scraped, neat restorations to spine and edges, 45 x 30 mm repair to upper board, lacking ties.)
