A RICHLY GILT RED MOROCCO BINDING FOR MARIE-AUGUSTE DE SULTZBACH, WITH HER ARMS.


Marie-Auguste de Sultzbach (1721-1794), married Charles-Phillippe-Theodore de Sultzbach (1724-1799), who acceded to the throne of Bavaria in 1777. This copy later formed part of the extensive collection of Robert Hoe (1839-1909), founder of the Grolier Club.

2 volumes, 8vo (155 x 85 mm). Roman type, 22 lines plus headline. (1) collation: π1 A-Z8/4 Aa-Bb4: 149 leaves (final verso blank). (2) collation: π1 A-Z8/4 Aa-Ff4/8 Gg1: 178 leaves. Woodcut head- and tailpieces. (Some very light spotting, dampstaining to outer margin of (2).)


binding: Contemporary French red morocco (160 x 95 mm) by Nicholas Denis Derome, richly gilt, floral border frame, large gilt arms of Marie-Auguste de Sultzbach in centre of 4 covers (OHR pl. 1061), printed German endpapers with a gold star and dot pattern, edges gilt. (Binding very slightly rubbed.)
