FUMO, BARTOLOMEO. Summa, sive aurea armilla. R.P. Bartholomaei Fumi Ord. Praedicatorum, ac haereticae pravitatis inquisitoris, quam emendatissima, & ingenti doctorum virorum sedulitate, supra omnes omnium editiones nune demum pristino sui nitori reddita. Antwerp: Gillis van den Rade for Gillis Steelsius, August 1576

A CONTEMPORARY POLISH BINDING FOR JAN OSTROŁĘCKI. The binding features blindstamped portraits of the Polish royal family, representing Sigismund I Augustus (1467-1548), his wife Bona Sforza (1494-1557), and Katherine (Queen of Sweden). Sten G. Lindberg attributes bindings with "portraits de la famille royale" to "L'Atelier de Reliures de Sigismond Auguste à Cracovie", and identifies similar gilt stamps of Christ with bindings executed for Jesuit colleges (although the stamp on the present copy measures 67 mm, smaller than those listed).

8vo (169 x 190 mm). Roman and italic type, text in 2 columns. collation: *4 A-3C8 4D4 (Final leaf blank): 400 leaves. Title-page with woodcut printer's device, some in-text woodcut illustrations, some early modern annotations and sections of text underlined in red and brown ink. (Some marginal dampstaining.)

(Old inkstaining to fore-edge, wear to spine.)
