Randolph Churchill, Winston's only son, hired Martin Gilbert as a research assistant in 1962. Churchill wrote 7 volumes of the biography (2 volumes of the Life, and 5 companion volumes) before his death in 1968; the final three were published posthumously by Gilbert, who was then selected as Churchill's official biographer before writing the final 14 volumes.
