Known for his old west and historical themes, Kenneth Pauling Riley developed his style under the mentorship of Harvey Dunn and Thomas Hart Benton. Originally working as an illustrator on the East Coast, Riley later received a commission from the U.S. Park Service to paint Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. The trips out west changed the trajectory of his career, and in 1973 he moved to Tucson to continue painting Western subjects. In 1982, Riley joined the Cowboy Artists of America and won the Prix de West award at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in 1995. In the later part of his career, Riley concentrated almost solely on Native American subjects.
