Description

Gertrude Stein

Autograph letter signed, to [Duncan?] Grant, making an appointment ("...come to lunch at one o'clock Friday and we will go out to Picassos afterwards..."), 1 page, 8vo, headed stationery of 27 Rue de Fleurus, n.d., creased

[with:] Photographic portrait postcard, depicting Stein and Alice B. Toklas on an aircraft steps in 1934, photographer's stamp of Carl Van Vechten, with postcard text on the reverse dated 29 November 1962

27 Rue de Fleurus was the site of Stein's salon, which was a huge influence on the development of modernism in art and literature and brought together such figures as Picasso, Fitzgerald, Matisse, Apollinaire, Joyce, and Pound. She was also the owner of a highly important collection of Picassos. This letter is probably addressed to Duncan Grant, who first visited Stein in Paris in 1909.
