Description
Peuerbach, Georg
Novae theoricae planetarum... a Petro Apiano... redactae, & eruditis figuris illustratae. [Colophon:] Venice: Petrus de Nicolinis for Melchior Sessa, 1551
Rare fifth edition of Peuerbach's work on the planetary system; not in Adams.
After observing the occultation of Jupiter by the moon in 1451, Peuerbach became a lifelong scholar of astronomy despite advanced degrees in philosophy. Traveling throughout the continent, Peuerbach continued to walk the line between science and the humanities— delivering lectures to various Italian universities and receiving a Master of Arts from the University of Vienna. Teaching based on the Ptolemaic system, Novae theoricae planetarium started as lectures on astronomy to Viennese students.
Small 8vo (155 x 95 mm), stitched. Woodcut diagrams, woodcut printer's ornament on verso of final leaf; annotations and scores in black ink to first gathering, a few gatherings nearly detached or loose, minor open tear affecting a few letters on C1 and D7, some minor repair to a few leaves, faint foxing to upper margins. Contemporary paper boards; worn, few stains and wormholes.
