First edition, including papers by Charles Babbage, J.F.W. Herschel, William Whewell, and others.
This three year run of the Transactions of the Cambridge Society begins with its premier volume published in 1821, with the society founded just two years prior. True to its founding vision to “keep alive the spirit of inquiry,” the present work features the works of numerous scientists of various disciplines to its earliest contributions.
First meeting as students at the University of Cambridge in 1812, Babbage, Herschel, and Whewell would correspond, travel and collaborate for the remainder of their careers. Major contributions from the Babbage's early career are found within Transactions (Vol. 1) with work such as "Observations on the notation employed in the calculus of functions." Works by John Herschel, co-founder of the Analytical Society at Cambridge alongside Babbage, is featured within various volumes ranging in subject from calculus to optics.
Two parts bound in 3 volumes, folio (289 x 220 mm). 30 engraved plates, one of which folding, 2 lithographic drawings; one plate misbound, some leaves unopened and trimmed, occasional foxing. Contemporary blue wrappers; rebacked, chipped.
