Description

Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, called Guercino

Cento 1591–1666 Bologna

A putto

bears inscription in brown ink, lower left: Gennari originale, and again in pencil, verso

red chalk

133 by 204 mm

Probably Felix (1860-1914) and Juan A. Bernasconi (1862-1920),

by inheritance to Marià Elvira Celia Méndez de Bernasconi (1927-2005), Buenos Aires (L.5374);

sale, London, Christie's, 1 April 1987, lot 65 (as Cesare Gennari, with another)

It has been suggested that the drawing may relate to Guercino's altarpiece of Virgin of the Rosary, with Sts. Dominic and Catherine of Siena, painted in 1641-42 for the Church of S. Marco Evangelista, Osimo, and still in situ.1 Despite the attribution to Gennari that is inscribed by a later hand, the drawing seems convincing as a study by Guercino himself.
