Anonymous sale, Munich, Hampel, 25 March 2015, lot 563 (as attributed to Astolfo Petrazzi);

Private collection, Vienna;

Whence sold, Vienna, Im Kinsky, 15 December 2020, lot 79 (as attributed to Astolfo Petrazzi).

This painting has been traditionally attributed to Astolfo Petrazzi (1583–1665), on the basis of similarities with his canvas on the same theme, Amor vincitore, painted for Agostino Chigi (1563–1639) and currently in the Galleria Nazionale di Palazzo Barberini, Rome.1 Although comparisons can be drawn between the compositions, particularly in the still life elements in the lower portions of both canvases, the softness of the handling in Petrazzi's painting is subsituted here for sharper, Caravaggesque contrasts in lighting which gesture towards a Roman hand.
