Three Mughal Silver Seals, India, 18th Century

Where acquired by the present collector.

One seal bears the name Sombre and the date 1179 AH/1765-66 AD, referring to the European adventurer Walter Reinhard Sombre, who served several North Indian courts before settling in Agra (see Buckland, Dictionary of Indian Biography, 1968, p. 372). The second seal is inscribed with the name George Hirsht (?) of the British Company and dated 1186 AH/1772-73 AD, while the third bears the date 1173 AH/1759-60 AD but no name.
