A Pair of Dutch Delft Blue and White Models of Obelisks, circa 1730
painted on the sides of the tapering square body with a basket filled with floral flowers, the edges with bands of floral scrollwork, resting on four bun feet, upon a square pedestal base painted with similar baskets of flowers, over four bun feet, CK marks in blue for Cornelis Koppens, owner of De Metaale Pot (The Metal Pot) factory from 1724-1757.

Relatively few examples of this model appear to have survived. The 1713 inventory of Het Loo Palace, Apeldoorn, lists two pairs of "pyramids", as models of this type were referred to during the 18th century, and fragments of an obelisk (unmarked), were excavated in 1979 in Queen Mary's garden, adjacent to her cellar dairy at the palace, as noted by Aronson, op. cit., p. 38. An obelisk model of varying form, modelled with shell motifs and marked AK for Adriaensz Kocx, owner of the De Grieksche A (The Greek A) factory from 1687-1701, was sold, Mario Buatta: Prince of Interiors, Sotheby's New York, 24 January 2020, lot 115.
