According to The History of the New York Yacht Club, by John Parkinson, Jr., "Twenty yachts started for the Astor Cups on August 7 off Newport in a light sou'wester with a huge spectator fleet of steam yachts in attendance. The course was from Brenton Reef Lightship around buoys off Block Island and West Island (now Sakonnet). Lengthy press accounts indicate it was a light affair involving the age old questions, whether to hug the beach or go offshore. In the end, Elmina defeated Queen, Muriel, Corona, and Venona in that order for the Schooner Cup."

The Elmina was a schooner yacht built in 1901 for Frederick Foster Brewster. It was designed by A. Carey Smith and built by Townsend and Downey. Brewster was a New Haven financier and philanthropist who was well known in the yachting circles, having seven Astor cups among his yachting trophies.
