Description

modelled by J. J. Kändler, wearing a gold-ground coat painted with indianische Blumen, and lilac breeches, a pocket watch and writing implements on the scroll-footed desk, the letter inscribed ‘Ma chère’, the base applied with flowers and leaves, crossed swords mark in blue

The figure is listed in Kändler’s Taxa: '1. Figur, einen Monsieur, der einen Liebes-Brieff schreibt, vorstellend, mit der Feder in der Hand am Tische sizend, 6 Thlr.', [1 figure, depicting a gentleman writing a love-letter, seated at a desk with a pen in the hand]; see Sarah-Katharina Andres-Acevedo, Die autonomen figürlichen Plastiken Johann Joachim Kaendlers und seiner Werkstatt zwischen 1731 und 1748, Band II, Stuttgart, 2023, p. 264, no. 31, where a further example from a private collection is illustrated. Cranfield University used non-invasive X-ray fluorescence (XRF) for this lot to screen the green enamel for chromium, which was detected, a result consistent with later manufacture.
